FEBRUARY

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! We hope all of you had a great January! We are more than half way through the school year and there is so much more fun to be had! We enjoyed exploring different books by the author Jan Brett, learning about winter animals and making and erupting a volcano in January. We enjoyed reading so many great books and creating so many great works of art. We think the children especially enjoyed playing in our “fake snow” in the water table! Our class celebrated three of the children’s birthdays in January on the 30th with a birthday bash! The children had fun decorating birthday crowns and eating funfetti cupcakes!!!

During February we will focus on the letters of the Alphabet, focusing on one letter each day. We will also be introducing the “ME” Bag this month. We have learned that the children enjoy participating in show and tell and are always asking to share special home toys with extended day.

The ME Bag will give each child the opportunity to collect things from home to bring in and share. Each day a child will be sent home with the ME Bag and is allowed to bring in three (3) special items the following day. We ask that one of the items begin with the letter of the day, for instance if the letter is “A” they could bring in their favorite “Astronaut.” We are excited to see what special things each child chooses!

With the arrival of the letter “F” we will begin to read “Flat Stanley” a chapter book about a boy who gets flattened by a billboard and then is able to go on adventures through the mail. The children will create their own Flat Stanley’s and have the opportunity to take them on an adventure during February vacation. A follow-up letter will go out explaining what to do with your child’s Flat Stanley!

On February 15th we will be celebrating 100 days of extended day by creating works of art using 100 cheerios!!

3/6 January News

“From all of us on the 3-6 teaching team, thank you all so much for the           holiday gifts, treats and greetings. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and                 kindness!   Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2013!”
-Malaina, Ellie, Kevin

Since the beginning of the school year, we have been sitting down with each 3-6 student, one-on-one to discuss a goal they want to set for themselves for the year.  Answers have ranged from academic goals and athletic goals to social goals and goals of learning how to do something new!  The teachers have been busy observing each child as he/she works on his/her goal and have been making notes and taking pictures of them working on their individual goal.  Many of the activities and curriculum has been planned to help children achieve their goals.  For example, one student has a goal of learning how to make apple pie.  During our fall unit, we worked this student’s goal into our fall curriculum by allowing him to lead the students in making apple pie.  From start to finish, this student was in charge of reading the recipe and following the instructions to successfully make his first apple pie with assistance from teachers when needed.

The month of January will be dedicated to a curriculum based on student’s individual goals.  For example, one student noted her goal to be to learn more about Paris.  Therefore, Paris will be part of the 3-6 learning experience for all the students.  Some students’ chose goals that cannot be measured so specifically since they are more personal goals such as “make new friends.”  For this type of goal, for example, teachers have been and will continue to observe and make note of their interactions with other students and the friendships they have established.

When you receive your yearly observation of your child in March, you will see your child’s goal and any notes regarding how your child worked at accomplishing that goal or how he/she is still working to accomplish it.

Additional News, Notes and Reminders
-Children should come daily with a hat, gloves, scarf, warm jacket, gloves and boots.  We will continue to go outside, so please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  We recommend keeping a change of clothes in their backpacks incase they get wet outside.  Also, children may bring a pair of slippers to keep at HEDP or in his/her backpack to change into after coming inside.

-Wednesday is skating day!  If your child is signed up, please be sure they come each Wednesday with appropriate clothing and boots for walking.  Also, they must bring their skates and helmets each week!

                                    Happy New Year to everyone!!
We hope everyone had a fun and relaxing break. This month will be filled with new resolutions for the classroom and focus on fulfilling our individual goals. Our room will also be turned into a winter wonderland as we learn focus on all the wonders winter can bring. We will end Roll Into Reading and begin a 3 part classroom management system which begins with the whole group bean jar.

As the children work together to follow directions and succeed there will be a bean that is put in the jar. When the jar is filled we will celebrate with a cupcake party!

For our second system we will have table groups, tables will be assigned to the children and each tables job is to keep their tables clean, begin homework and reading in a timely manner and stay quiet while listening to teachers directions.

When the table groups earn 25 stars they get to pick from the prize box.

Lastly, the final system is the individual part, this one is very important for the children that are always doing the right thing and encouraging the others to do the same. There will be a taped 25 spot grid with the childs name on the wall and when they complete their work and stay quiet they earn a star for their individual chart. The children will be told ahead of time that the activity or direction will be worth a star if completed.

Important Dates to Remember.....

Appropriate Winter Gear Reminder

Please note that we will be heading outdoors on a daily basis.  Your child will need to come prepared with appropriate attire for cold, wet, and snowy weather.  We recommend that he/she bring a reusable shopping bag with snow pants, gloves/mittens, hat, winter jacket and boots.  It is essential that all items are labeled with your family name.  Please contact Noelle should your family have challenges finding winter wear.  We appreciate your cooperation!

A special note from all the entire HEDP teaching team.
Thank you to all the families who donated to the teacher holiday fund your gift  was much appreciated. We are so lucky to be able to be a part of your children's lives each and everyday!
