PreK/Kindergarten Extended Day

January was full of fun and interesting topics. We learned about dinosaurs, what happens when you soak an egg in vinegar, and we wrote letters to our future first grade selves. In February we are continuing to explore child directed  interests during our letter of the week activities!

For letter H we made homes for hermit crabs, hearts in preparation for Valentines Day and hosted  a crazy hat day. During letter I we will make igloos, learn how to make ice grow, and do a writing prompt describing what ingredients make you, you! Making Jellyfish, letter sorting jars, math with jellybeans are activities we will do during letter J.

Along with the letter of the week we have been doing alphabet pages. Your children trace the letters and then practice writing them on their own. Every week we also make a list of words that start with the letter of the week. Everyday your children add more and more vocabulary to our list.  Our curriculum is based on the handwriting without tears curriculum.

As a reminder with the snow every child needs to be sent to Extended Day with gloves (preferably waterproof), snow-pants, jacket, hat, snow boots (please have shoes to change into after going outside), and a plastic reusable shopping bag to place all of the wet snow-gear in. If you gave your child permission to go sledding on the hill next to the school, you must provide a sled and a helmet. Your child will not be permitted to sled without these two requirements.

February Vacation: February 16th-20th- We wish you a great winter break!

Wish List:

--If you would like to donate any extra snow gear to Extended Day, we would really appreciate it.

--Paper Towels

--3-M reusable hooks

--White laundry bins

--Clorox Wipes

Items to note:

Please update your child's extra clothes bag. They have grown and the weather is a bit colder than the fall.

PreK-Please bring in an extra pillow case so we can give you the current one to wash.

PreK-Please note pickup is at 2:25pm. It is essential that you arrive before our Kindergarten friends arrive.

Thank you for all your support and cooperation!

Warm wishes,

Angelica, Mackenzie, Christiane & Emily

FEBRUARY

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! We hope all of you had a great January! We are more than half way through the school year and there is so much more fun to be had! We enjoyed celebrating “Wish Days” and accomplishing some of our student’s goals. We learned about tigers and polar bears and had a three-way tie during a game of tiger trivia pursuit. We created winter scenes and gingerbread houses, we played with electronics, had a movie day, had a pajama and costume day and we baked brownies. We incorporated a lot of books about feelings and focused on what positive strategies we can use when we get angry. We also had fun with lots of winter crafts…children especially loved the snow dough! Our class celebrated three of the children’s birthdays in January on the 17th with a birthday bash! The children had fun signing birthday cards and eating cupcakes!!!

This month we will continue to focus on goals. We will explore with Korean cooking and bake some delicious cookies! The children will have the chance to learn how to sew and get the opportunity to explore with glow in the dark! We will be making red velvet cupcakes in honor of Valentine’s Day and enjoy them for our birthday bash on February 13th.

A couple of reminders this month…

* Please sign your child out EVERYDAY!

* Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing to go out and play in all this snow! Warm Jacket, Snowpants, Hat, Waterproof Gloves...

Also please include a second pair of shoes and socks, so that your child is able to change out of wet boots.

HEDP First Grade Community
February Newsletter

With the cold month of January behind us, hopefully the rest of February will be a bit warmer.  We have planned fun filled activities for the children that will help them learn about geography in preparation for school vacation week.  We are very excited about reading Jeff Brown's book Flat Stanley.

We will continue to work on fulfilling the children's goals by learning about animals with this months featured animal being the groundhog and working on our writing and spelling skills.  When we return from February vacation the children will have a chance to share stories from their vacations along with pictures and flat souvenirs, they will be able to use their imaginations to design a fantasy dream vacation.

Each week throughout the month of February, the children in the classroom have been focusing on friendship and had a chance to earn extra warm and fuzzies for kind acts observed by teachers.  They have also posted kind acts that they observe on the “shout out” board in the hall.  Last but not least,  children they will have a chance to wear hats to show that they are putting a cap on unkind actions, turning their shirts around to say they are turning their back on unkind actions and learn what a good friend means.  We will be continuing these activities into the month of March.

We understand that the weather has caused many challenges and delays. Your child's safety is our biggest concern.  Please be aware of the conditions and send your child with the appropriate clothing as we go outdoors as much as possible.  Boots, gloves, a hat and jacket is essential.  We tend to spend 20-45 minutes outdoors on any given day.  Your understanding and coooperation is appreciated!  In addition, HEDP is aware of all the inturruptions in your child's schedule.  Please contact Noelle should you have questions or concerns regarding attendance. Keep warm and be safe!

Dates to remember:

February 16th-20th - School vacation week

Wish list items:

Spray cleaners
Clorox wipes
Paper towels
Rainbow loom bands
Empty shoe boxes
White laundry bins

Thank you very much for all your support!  We appreciate all that you do to make our classroom and warm and caring community!  We look forward to learning about your family vacation through “Flat Stanley”.

Kindly,

Diana and Ellie

Heath Extended 4-7 Newsletter

During the month of February...

During the month of February, the 4-7 students will continue taking part in personal yearly goals and wish days.  Cooking goals include, “learn how to make crepes” and “learn how to make cookie pie.”  During a spa wish day, we will also incorporate a student’s goal of “learn how to french braid.”  As a part of another student’s goal we will be spending time learning how to paper mache’.

Wish days continue to be a popular part of the 4-7 curriculum.  Wish days give each student the opportunity to pick a special activity of their choice designed specifically for them.  Students are guaranteed to have their wish day scheduled on a day they attend HEDP.  Students picked ideas from a list, while others wrote in their own idea.  Ideas that students had and we will be fulfilling this month include, a double fudge brownie day, glow in the dark party, and “beauty” day.  For our “beauty” day we will be painting nails and styling hair.  We will need a parent’s signature in order for your child to participate in getting his/her nails painted.  For hair styling, we will be using gel and hairspray and your child will receive his/her own comb.  Please look for this permission sheet at the sign out station.  Other wish days we will fulfill this month will be Electronic’s Day- Tuesday, February 10th, and Movie Day- Friday, February 7th.  For electronic’s day, please note that no cell phones will be allowed to be used as an electronic.  In addition, texting, emailing, and picture taking is also not allowed.  This special day is for gaming and listening to music, and gives students the opportunity to bring in an electronic from home with your permission.

Sportsmanship and Team Building

We have noticed great sportsmanship and team building happening in 4-7 during outdoor and gym time.  The students have shown a huge interest in the basketball game, Knock Out.  Whether in the gym or outside bundled in winter clothes, many students have been taking part in this fun and exciting game.  We have noticed more and more students joining in on this game, and often times we find that while it is always a choice to play, the majority of the group is taking part or cheering others on.  We have noticed good sportsmanship by students giving each other compliments on a doing a good job, encouraging others to play, being content when “getting out”, and helping each other during the game.  Students taking part in this student led game, is another way 4-7 is working on team building.  In addition to 4-7 students doing a great job working with each other, they also did a great job taking part in a game of basketball with the 1st grade students.  The 4-7 students helped the 1st grade students learn the game of basketball.  Again, they encouraged them for a job well done, passed the ball to them, and scored a few points for their team.  We have been invited to join the 1st grade group in an organized game of baseball this month.
