Please pop into HEDP to visit our classrooms and observe the wonderful work that takes place in the afternoon. This will be a great time to have your child check out some of the activities, routines, classrooms and teachers that are with HEDP.  A look into May in Pre-K Extended Day
Spring has sprung in Pre-K Extended Day, we did some planting and are excited to watch our flowers sprout! Through the month on May we will continue our letter of the week curriculum learning about T,U,V, W, and X. We will kick off May learning about the letter T and turtles. For the letter U we will become astronauts and going up up and away learning about outer space. V is for vehicles, we will be learning about different forms of transportation and creating roads and vehicles to zip around in. For the letter W we will learn about walrus’ and be creating walrus crafts. The last week of May we will be learning about the letter X with out theme “I am eXtraordinary”! Along with all these fun themes we will be creating spring crafts and enjoying the sunshine with some outdoor activities. The children continue stretching their bodies in yoga and learning Spanish with Nelly on Tuesday's. The children thoroughly enjoy this activity, they have learned many poses and songs, we encourage you to ask them to show you their moves! Important Dates: -Thursday, May 2nd is an Early Release Day. Please remember that on early release days there is NO PRE-K EXTENDED DAY AVAILABLE, unless your child attends the later extended day program from 2:20-5:45. In the case that your child is scheduled for PRE-K EXTENDED DAY on a day that an early release day falls on, and you would like to swap that day for another within that same week, please let us know. -Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day - No school -Monday, June 3rd - Save the date! Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” ― Dr. Seuss  Hope everyone is enjoying the warm and sunny weather, I know that our class is truly happy that we have switched up our schedule so that we have homework/reading, meeting, story time and activities all before we go out so that they can stay out and play with all the other grades. There is some significant buzz going round the classroom about friends being able to organize and teach a tabletop activity during our activity time. Here is how it works, they write down on a piece of paper what their idea is, what, if any, supplies are needed then they submit it to us. We then discuss the particulars of when they are able to run their activity. We have friends working with friends and encouraging others to try something new, it is great community building! So far we have had; Nilou and Maeve running a nail spa, Geo holding a creating lilypads out of coffee filters table and Connor showed friends how to make flowers out of pipecleaners. Michelle and Bihan teamed up with each other to create a ‘ Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus’ bulletin. On “deck” is Leo with a new card game and Yenna will be teaching friends how to speak Korean. Friends have been earning stars for their kind and helpful behavior and their books are filling up with stars! They quickly turn them in for a prize from our treasure box, all good stuff IMPORTANT DATES........................ Extended Day We hope everyone had a wonderful April! Just 42 more days of school left! We are having fun learning about the United States! We met a lobster from Maine, made fresh guacamole and salsa from the southwest, created a tornado and built a skyscraper, taller than the teachers! We have been exploring National Parks and discovering what makes them so special and protected. The children got very creative and made some wonderful crafts, representing different states. Our class celebrated five of the children’s birthdays in April on the 25th with a birthday bash! The children had fun decorating birthday cards and eating “Statue of Liberty” cupcakes! This month we will continue learning about the United States. We will create our own Grand Ole Opry and have a southern BBQ for the Southeast. We will celebrate Mardi Gras and discover the difference between crocodiles and alligators for the Deep South. We will play baseball and create with clay during our week of the Midwest and Great Lakes. Finally we will have our own rodeo and discover Old Faithful when learning about the West. The last week of May will be devoted to having each child create their own National Park using a variety of recyclable materials. We look forward to displaying these at our end of the year party on June 3rd! Heath Extended Day 3-6 Newsletter During the month of April, the 3-6 students participated in activities based around the theme of each of the four early release days. Movie Week: During this week, students either chose to work independently or in a group to make a commercial for a “mysterious item” that they pick out of a bag! The students did a wonderful job transferring a classroom item into something unique and special. In each commercial, students wrote a script, rehearsed, came up with slogan/jingle, prepared props and creatively acted out their commercial. Students commmercials included products such as, Da Soap, Super Hero Soup, Techo Tape, Felix, Toilet Paper, Soccer group. We are so proud of all the hard work each student put into his/her commercial. Their creativy and imagination shined! Also, during movie week, students partcipated in a day of movie trivia! Did you know that Judy Garland was paid just $35.00 a week for The Wizard of Oz and her dog Toto actually received $125.00 per week? Or how about that Tom Hanks is the voice of Woody in Toy Story! The students did an amazing job and we are so impressed by their wealth of knowledge regarding movies! Science Week: During this week, students explored the attributes of both a raw egg and a hard boiled egg. They cracked each open to see what the inside of the shell looked like. We then placed a raw egg and a hard boiled egg in separate jars of white vinegar, made predictions of what was going to happen, and watched the transformation of the eggs for the next week. Upon arrival at extended day and/or throughout the day, students wrote down their observations of what was happening to the egg. After the eggs had been sitting in the vinegar over April vacation, we opened up the jars to see just what had happened to them. Some children predicted they would bounce! The hard boiled egg did just that! The raw egg, had a soft squishy outside, but when the teacher was instructed by the students to see if it bounced, it actually broke open to a raw middle! Also, during science week, students participated in an experiement we like to call, EGGBERT! During the Eggbert Experiement, each group of students were given the same materials and were instructed to create a “safe home” for a raw egg that was going to be dropped from the side school balcony. Different groups came up with a different way to use their provided materials. While some groups did a parachute design, other groups went with a more covered design. The students had a wonderful time dropping their group’s Eggbert Home from the balcony! We only had two cracked eggs!! Community Service Week: Thank you to all the families that donated old items to our MSPCA donation box. The MSPCA was very appreciative or these items and were very appreciative of the many items that the 3-6 group made for the animals. Before our visit, students made: honey and bird seed bird feeers for the birds, cardboard mazes for the rodents, homemade dog bisquits for the dogs, and catnip toys and fleece beds for the cats. While on the visit, the 3-6 students asked the tour guide many wonderful questions regarding the MSPCA. In addition, the 3-6 students were able to answer so many of the questions that the tour guide asked. Did you know that cats are the number one animal the MSPCA receives? Last year, the MSPCA received 3000 cats! Also, during this week, a group of 3-6 students took a walk over to Eliot Field and cleaned it up! Sports Week: During sports week, 3-6 students participated in an organized game of street hockey and this week we will have an organized game of capture the flag. Additionally this week, to finish off sports week, 3-6 will host a field day and finish with an awards ceremony! SAVE THE DATE!!
