What’s happening in 4-6?

During the month of May, students in 4-6 will be finishing up their portfolio pages and gathering and preparing artwork to display at the end of “HEDP end of year celebration.”  Art that will be displayed will include their U.S. monuments, posters, stuffed fabric dolls with clothes they have been busy sewing, and more!  In addition this month, we will continue with a curriculum based on student goals.  This month we will “learn how to make brownies,” “learn about France,” and “learn how to make crepes,”

With the nice weather approaching we will fulfill our sports wish days such as: street hockey, capture the flag, football, and baseball.

On Friday, May 9th, 4-6 will be hosting a “Milly Wan Potato” party!  “Milly Wan Potato” is a story that one of our fourth grade students started last year.  As each part is completed, this fourth grade student shares it will the class.  We have reserved time on Fridays during our Friday share for this student to share her story.  The class loves and look forward to hearing the next chapter in “Milly Wan Potato” on Friday afternoons.  The story includes illustrations and at the beginning of the year, students received a “Milly Wan Potato” coloring book featuring all of the characters.

        MAY

We hope everyone had a wonderful April! Just 39 more days of school left! We had a great month full of fun experiments, creative crafts and descriptive writing. We put our scientist hats on and made slime from scratch. We practiced our creative writing skills and described a night as the tooth fairy. We spent a week making jewelry and the children produced some really nice pieces.

Our class celebrated four of the children’s birthdays in April on the 15th and 30th with a birthday bash! The children had fun decorating birthday cards and eating cupcakes!

This month we will welcome Spring by planting flowers and herbs and keeping a journal to chart their growth. We will continue with fun activities that target the children’s goal for the year; including learning about tornadoes, Pocahontas, and bugs. We will celebrate Cinco Di Mayo with tacos and a piñata and make maracas!  We will be visiting the Brookline Public Works Department on May 20th. The last two weeks of May will be devoted to having each child create their own shadow puppets and put on a show with their classmates. We look forward to displaying these at our end of the year party on June 3rd!

May 2014

During the month of April the children focused many of their activities on kindness and caring, so it only seems reasonable that during the month of May the children have the ultimate challenge of filling up a “warm and fuzzy jar”. Acts of kindness will be observed and we will place pom-poms in the jar to represent them, followed by a “cold and prickly jar” filled with  prickly pom-poms representing hurtful actions placed in a different jar. We are confident that the children will quickly accomplish this goal of showing above-and-beyond acts of kindness and “win” a special trip over to Elliot Field.

During the month of May the children are going to have the opportunity to create gifts for that special someone in their lives that they want to make a gift for.  Since spring is in the air, we are going to be making and growing our very own chia heads.  We will finish up the final weeks of the month preparing for the end of the year art show schedule for June 3rd (more information to follow).

The 2-3 classroom would like to give a special thank you to Colleen Suhanoshy who owns and is Head Chef at  Rifullo Cafe on Cypress Street, Brookline.  Colleen has been  kind enough to give the children in the 2-3 classroom monthly cooking lessons for the past two months which have been a lot of fun.

Special events and dates to be aware of:

May 7th - Early Release - Swan Boats and special snack

May 26th - Memorial Day - No school
