New and Old
  • April went by so quickly! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and found some time to spend with family and friends.
  • We had a great time watching Mike Piazza’s High Flying Dog Show on our half-day this past month. Mike and his border collies Bullet and Maui were a great surprise! A few green team members were lucky enough to be chosen to help in the show and volunteer ideas for Mike’s next dog’s name.
  • We are still chipping away at our team’s remaining goals. Our team had a blast using the gym to complete Hanna’s goal of playing a soccer group with our whole group.
  • We were very excited to attend the kindergarten “Q & U Wedding”. Be sure to ask a green team friend to fill you in on the annual tradition put on by Angelica and the rest of the kindergarten team.

  •
Reminders:  Please remember that the sign out sheets are legal documents.
We ask that you sign out child out on a daily basis!
ALSO,  we have another early 12:40 dismissal on May 2nd and NO SCHOOL May 29th.

Today in History Highlights

  • Some of the April today in history highlights included: The death of Ferdinand Magellan, learning about the tradition of organ music at baseball stadiums and watching footage from NASA’s Hubble Telescope.

May 2017
The children have continued to demonstrate a talent for public speaking with the “15 Minutes of Fame”  series.  During the month of April we learned about one child’s adventures in Florida and about a child’s affinity for 3D art as she shared a piece she created by cutting and taping paper in a creative manner. We have also had a few children who have chosen to read aloud their favorite books to their friends. We heard The Day the Crayons Came Home, by Drew Daywalt, A Giraffe and A Half by Shel Silverstein, and What Animals Really Like by Fiona Robinson. Our audience has continued to do a fabulous job listening to the presenter and asking thoughtful questions.

We finished up the month with a child organizing a game named “Kaboosh.” To play this game the children had to write one word on a piece of paper and then the children in the classroom  merged the words together to create a highly imaginative and comical story.  We are looking forward to continuing the “15 Minutes of Fame” series until June, at which point every child that signed up to share will have had an opportunity.  There is a schedule posted near the sign out book to ensure that you and your child has plenty of time to prepare.  If you know your child will be absent on the particular day, please let us know so that we can reschedule. We are looking forward to the days becoming both longer and warmer. In anticipation, we have started decorating our classroom with umbrellas that share what each child enjoys most about “April Showers.”

We were sad to postpone our field trip to visit our readers at the Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association due to rain, but we are looking forward to going on the make-up date on Tuesday, May 2nd! We cannot wait to see how the blooming daffodils that the children planted in the fall and hear the wonderful stories shared in a fun, new location. We will also enjoy a special snack while the readers shared the stories.

The Yellow Team has planned a fun filled month of May!  Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, the children have created a community whose core values are based upon kindness and respect towards everyone they encounter.   As the year winds down, we will be looking to include the other classrooms in our core values by creating flowers that will be shared with the four other classrooms.  Throughout the month we will be discussing different members of the community, different kinds of communities, and important qualities of positive community members. Our month long project will encourage the children to reflect about those important qualities and the role that the children play within their community.

Please check out our display in the classroom under the umbrella.  Our garden will be blooming soon and each child will share how they feel they have grown as part of both the HEDP and the Minion Room community in our “garden.”
Please make sure that as the weather changes that children are dressing appropriately and have refillable water bottles.  We always go outside to enjoy some fresh air and want to make sure that every child is comfortable and well hydrated.
Safety is our number one priority, please make sure you sign your child out each and every day!

We would like to thank the families that donated items to our classroom and the program.

A couple of reminders this month…
Please make sure you sign your child out at the end of each day!!

Heath Extended Day 4-7 News

What’s been happening in 4/7?

During the month of April we continued to themed days according the students’ wish day.  We celebrated Red Sox Opening Day with a wish of a “basesball themed day!”  We had a special snack of hot dogs, played an entire group of baseball trivia, and held a 4/7 HEDP baseball game in the gym.  Additionally, we had a movie and pajama day, pizza party, ultimate frisbee, cardboard day (students made awesome creations out of cardboard!) , and had many students be “teacher for the day.”  These “teachers for the day” planned activities such as iron-on beads and tye-dye cookies!  The students also had the opportunity to see special guests on the early release days.  They saw Awesome Rob the Magician perform some unbelievable magic tricks, a musical performance by Mystic Drums, and High Flying Frisbee Dogs- a show where dogs did the performing with frisbees!

What to look forward to in May
During the month of May we will finish up the last of the wish days and touch base with the students about their yearly goals.  Students who have not yet accomplished their goal will do so this month.  Out plans for wish days include hockey day, soccer day, ultimate frisbee, make slime and make Arepas a Venezuelan recipe that one of our students will share.  We also have students planning activities for their day of being the teacher.  As always, drama club will continue on Fridays throughout May.  As soon as we have a date for the High School Musical performance, we will let you know!

What happened:
April has come and gone! It was a very rainy month and we were able to utilize the gym and play indoor games. April also had 3 early release days. On early release days we always to to book some form of entertainment for our students. We were lucky enough to get Awesome Rob to perform magic, Mystic Drums to play music, and Flying High Dogs to show us some fun tricks their dogs can do.  Letter S was all about spring, we made egg carton flowers and made our own superheroes. During letter T’s week we talked about traveling and practiced making our own paper airplanes. Letter U’s week was dedicated to preparing for the Q & U wedding. Children decorated the aisle, made pictures, and learned more q & u words for the wedding.
Thank you to all families that donated or attended the Q & U wedding!!
What is to come:
May will be the last month of our alphabet unit! Letters V & W will kick off the month. We will be doing a volcano experiment as well as learning about the water cycle. Pre-K: May Newsletter
What we did:

We started out April with letter S which was all about spring! Our big project for that week was making flower bouquets out of egg cartons. Each child also created their own Superhero! They came up with their superhero name, designed a costume, and came up with their own special superpowers. We have them displayed in the classroom for everyone to see.
For letter T we talked about traveling which was followed by April vacation the week after. The last week of the month of April was dedicated to preparing for the Q&U wedding! We made an aisle for Q&U to walk down and decorated the classroom with drawings of Q&U. It was a blast! A big thank you to all the families who donated or came to the wedding!

What is to come:
We will be all finished with our alphabet unit by the end of the month!  We are combining letters V and W in the first week of May. We will be learning all about volcanoes and the water cycle. We’ll be making X-ray art for letter X and letter Y will be all about, “you” with self portraits. And Z will be all about zoo’s!

Happy May,
Angelica, Kelly, Caroline, & Christiane
