Please note that there will be no Pre-K extended day for children during Heath School Early Release Days for children who attend from 12:15-2:15pm. However, we are open for those who attend the longer extended day; 12:15-5:45pm. Please refer to the extended day contract should you have questions regarding this policy. We are willing to "swap a day" within the same week should you want to make up the missed day. Feel free to reply to this email with your preferred day to swap should you want this option.

 HEDP University Newsletter October, 2012 September has come to an end and the HEDP University clubs have been established. For the next few months, students from the HEDP programs will learn and create many things. We look forward to sharing these new topics with families via pictures, recordings and finished products. Kindergarten students will have the option to join in the daily club offering for the remainder of the session. So far, we have learned about nature by drawing and observing living things in our environment, created objects using legos (vehicles and houses), played rhythmic games, and played team games to foster teamwork. First and second graders have started building complex machine structures from legos, learning music through playing recorders, built structures out of interesting materials made to teacher specifications, and learned about motion. Third through sixth graders have started work on a giant 3-foot tall ferris wheel made of K'Nex, and started to broaden their knowledge of the world through science. Those who have chosen to, will soon be learning to play different music through an instrument that they have chosen. Others have started to broaden their technological repertoire of computer software. In each group, the next few weeks will explore great new challenges as well as chances to explore new experiences. Please ask your child(ren) all about the new things they are learning in the clubs offered at HEDP.  October 2012
Heath Extended Day 3-6 News What has 3-6 been up to? The 3-6 students have transitioned back to the school year smoothly and are in the full swing of things at extended day. After their daily homework and snack time, the kids have been spending a great amount of time outside taking advantage of the beautiful September weather. They have been enjoying four-square, basketball, swinging on the monkey bars, playing catch with the football, playing soccer against the wall, street hockey, water balloon pinatas, water balloon tosses, and hanging out with friends. Some kids have chosen to spend some time inside creatively making beanie buddy key chains. We are so happy to see the many different interest of the group and will continue to create a program based on these different interests. Many of the children in this year’s extended day class have showed a great interest in the game of Monopoly. It seems as though we have a lot of future bankers and realtors, as they have been spending much of their free choice time practicing these skills. Through this game, they are learning about money (counting, organizing and making change), the value of money (saving and not spending too much). It has been a great team building game, as students are teaching others how to play and communicating about what decisions to make. There has been a mix of older and younger students involved in the game! Trippin Out: Now being offered on Fridays Trippin Out, a program offered to 5th and 6th grade students has gained popularity over the years. If your 5th or 6th grade child attends HEDP on Fridays and is not already signed up for Thursday Trippin Out days, please see Malaina or Kevin for more information. Both Thursday and Friday trips will be the same each week. What to look forward to in October We have many wonderful activities planned for the month of October that we hope your child will enjoy. Students will be spending October making art projects and cooking based on the following themes. Weeks 1 and 2: Apples. Week 3: Pumpkins Week 4: Monsters/mummies/ghosts/goblins Week 5: Halloween treats News, Notes and Reminders *Glass Jars needed for October Art Project. If you have any that you were going to throw in the recycle bin, we will be happy to use them. Any kind or size jar will do. Happy October! Here are some of the topics we will be exploring this month. Fall gardens, we will try our hand at creating a mini garden for the classroom! Pumpkins, we will measure and guess just how many seeds are inside then roast and eat them. Leaves, we will be printing with them and creating people with them. Halloween will of course be interwoven throughout the month as well. The class will be reading The Big Pumpkin and putting together a Halloween play as well as a Monster Mash dance that Rachel will be choreographing for the class to have fun with! Our room by the end of the month will be transformed into a spooktacular place with many Halloweeny art creations for you to enjoy! JUST A REMINDER Friends have really enjoyed bringing in and using their Ninjago people and they are still welcome to bring them into play with, however there will be no trading of Ninjagos outside or inside of HEDP. Please share this information with your child before allowing them to bring their Ninjagos to school. We will be having a discussion about this on the first of October in class as well. Happy October Pre-K and Kindergarten families. The month of September flew by and while we had lots of activities planned we strayed from them to focus on settling into our new routines and creating friendships, which have been a joy to see flourish. While we did not make it to all of our September activities; the children worked very hard to complete their self-portraits, all about me books, and explored the concept of sinking and floating. Many self portraits are hanging in the hallway out side of Min-Jen’s classroom please check them out as the children are very excited to share their art work. As the brisk air moves in and the leaves begin to change we will be learning about apples, Fall, creepy crawlers, and various occupations. Through our apple exploration the children will become more aware of different flavors of apples, colors of apples, and way apples can be prepared. As well, we will be using apples to do stamping with paint and will be creating other various crafts. Our fall theme will focus on the changes that are occurring in nature and with the weather, and how these changes affect our daily life. We will be taking a fall walk and collecting artifacts which we will use to make collages and other crafts. During creepy crawlers week the children will be learning about various insects such as spiders, ants, and butterflies. Our last theme of the month will be occupations; through this theme children will become aware of various occupations that exist, and the responsibilities of that occupation. If you are interested in visiting our classroom to share some insights from your work-place please let us know, and we will arrange a time accordingly. Happy October everyone! The air is crisp and the sun is still warm on your face, it’s a great month to get outside and explore our surroundings and find out what is changing in nature. We will be following the migration of the Monarch butterfly and seeing just how long their journey is to a place far from where we live. By using straws we will see first hand how they drink up their nutrients and fly round. Next up we will focus on all different kinds of apples and which ones we enjoy the most. Moving on from our apple week we will find out what tree has large heart shaped leaves and long pods attached to it. Cat nine tails will be introduced along with the catalpa tree this week figuring out just what the two have in common. Pumpkins and Halloween of course will wrap up the month. We are encouraging all our families to help their children put together a “ Quiet Box “ for our short rest time after lunch. This can be a fun thing to do with your child over the weekend. All you need is some crayons or markers to decorate and some items that are quiet and soft to put into the box. This way during rest they have their Quiet boxes available to them as well as books and stuffies from our classroom in the case that they are not tired enough to rest. On Wednesday October 31st, we will be celebrating Halloween by acting out one of Jackie's favorite Halloween books, Big Pumpkin and then sharing some spooky treats! Enjoy your month!
